Loyola University Chicago student shot near campus, family wants answers

The family of an 18-year-old Loyola University student in Chicago who was shot near her campus by a masked gunman is seeking answers about their daughter’s apparent slaying while police are hunting for a suspect.

Sherridan Gorman was shot in the head while walking with friends at Tobey Prinz Beach, less than a mile from the Illinois campus, around 1 a.m. Thursday. in accordance with WLS.

“Our beloved daughter, Sheridan, was taken from us this morning in Chicago. There is no way to soften this – this was murder,” her family said. in the statement on NBC Chicago. “Sheridan was the light of our lives. He made people feel seen, safe, and loved just by being who he was. He lived his faith with kindness, compassion, and joy, and he loved his family and friends deeply.”

The incident happened when a male suspect approached the group and started shooting in their direction, hitting Gorman in the head, FOX 32. report.

Gorman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Gorman was not the target of the shooting, and authorities are working to find the person responsible for his death, WLS reported.

A campus security alert sent to students revealed that the shooting occurred around 1:15 a.m. at Tobey Beach Airport and described the perpetrator as wearing a mask.

The alert added that Chicago authorities are investigating a possible connection to other recent incidents of violence in the area.

In a letter sent to students Thursday morning, Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed confirmed Gorman’s death while addressing the campus community.

“It is very sad that I have to write and tell you that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed this morning,” said Reed. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew him.”

The university added that, based on available information, there is no ongoing threat on campus.
