Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla called Secretary of State Marco Rubio a liar on Tuesday and accused him of deliberately deceiving the American people.

“Everywhere, however, he lies, he lies continuously. He continuously aims to deceive public opinion in the US, the US Congress and the international community,” said Rodriguez on “The Story.”

The Trump administration is intensifying its campaign of economic pressure against Cuba, following the impeachment of former Cuban President Raul Castro in the US – a move that Rodriguez criticized as a violation of international law.

“Why did you wait 30 years to do this?” he asked. “We will have to ask, what is the moral value? What is the legal benefit of these allegations at this point? Or if this is part of a political story aimed at manipulating US public opinion to justify a military attack on Cuba.”

Cuba’s foreign minister said Rubio, the top US official, is running a dangerous political story designed to manipulate American public opinion and gain support for violence against Cuba.

He also dismissed allegations that Cuba poses a national security threat to the United States, calling it absurd and stressing that the communist nation does not want to be an enemy.

“Cuba is a small island – 100,000 square kilometers and 10 million citizens,” Rodriguez said.

“Based on that logic, what would be the common sense that Cuba would threaten a major nuclear power?” he continued. “We will have to ask the Secretary of State if he has any evidence… I heard him lying as he continues this matter.”

Cuba reportedly has a stockpile of military aircraft given to Russia and China, which the United States considers a threat.

Rodriguez said it was “unbelievable” that US officials would portray Cuba as a threat while at the same time threatening military violence and regime change.

He criticized the US oil embargo on Cuba which has caused blackouts across the country since January.

“The Secretary of State is one of the main thinkers in threatening the military in Cuba, the embargo,” he said.

In a video message to Cubans on May 20, Rubio pledged $100 million to help with the crisis and blamed the Cuban government for the island’s ongoing power outages.

Rodriguez described it as cruel and said it caused a lot of humanitarian damage to the island nation.

The Cuban ambassador also spoke to President Donald Trump, talking about Cuba as a failing country, where he asked why the United States would economically suffocate what he sees as an economy that is already struggling.

“If the Cuban government would be a dysfunctional country, and the Cuban economy would not function, what would be the use of the executive order of the president of the United States that was issued on January 29, declaring a total embargo of force against Cuba? What would be the need?” he asked.

Rodriguez argued that Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, is using his Cuban ancestry for political gain.

“He wasn’t born in Cuba, he doesn’t know Cuba. He doesn’t know anything about Cuba.”
