A 16-year-old North Carolina girl and a 28-year-old man face murder charges after three members of the girl’s family were found shot to death in their home, authorities said Friday during a news conference.

Star Grant, 16, and Devon O’Neil Loving, 28, face three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, according to the County Sheriff’s Office.

Due to the seriousness of the charges, Grant is charged as an adult. Like Class A felonies, the charges may carry a life sentence or the death penalty in the state of North Carolina.

The gruesome discovery was made around 7:15 pm Thursday, when Buncombe County deputies responded to a welfare check at a home on Ashworth Drive in Fairview.

The check was requested by a relative after friends and family did not hear from the victims, officials said.

While deputies conducted two previous welfare checks earlier in the week, one on Monday and one on Wednesday, authorities said they did not have the necessary evidence of an emergency to legally enter the home until the third visit.

After entering the home, deputies found the bodies of Travis Eugene Grant, 41, Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42, and Sharon Harwood Grant, 66, all dead from gunshot wounds.

Authorities have confirmed that Star Grant is the daughter of Travis and Kimberly Grant, and the granddaughter of Sharon Grant.

Investigators quickly realized the 16-year-old was missing, and in a joint effort with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Gatlinburg Police Department, authorities tracked down Grant NoLoving across state lines.
