New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described his relationship with President Donald Trump as “sincere and direct” despite the president’s recent criticism of him.
“I would say it’s honest, direct, and productive,” Mamdani said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I’ll keep the intensity of that between the two of us. A lot of that is based on the principle of confidentiality, but what I will say is that those conversations, no matter how they happen, come back to one thing, one of the few things we have in common, which is our love for New York City and how to bring the city together.”
When asked if she can “trust” Trump, Mamdani noted that it is part of the negotiations that “must continue,” although she thanked the president for his efforts to help free Columbia University student, Elmina “Ellie” Aghayeva, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I think we see in those decisions the importance of a relationship that is honest and direct and that seems to be productive and that honesty means acknowledging areas of disagreement. When I told him that, I told him again, as I have said many times, that I believe that this ICE attack is brutal, inhumane and does nothing to achieve the interests that Mamdani said is public safety.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comment.
Mamdani’s comments come after Trump criticized the mayor for introducing a “pied-à-terre” tax on New York City properties worth more than $5 million.

“The sad thing is that Mayor Mamdani is RULING New York! He has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will end up being BAD. TAX, TAX, TAX POLICIES ARE WRONG. People are running away. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THESE ‘STICKS’ JUST DON’T WORK!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Before Trump’s inauguration, Mamdani and Trump had met at least twice since Mamdani was elected in November. Reports also suggested that the two have been calling and texting each other quite frequently.

The two commentators have surprisingly maintained a good relationship despite their different political leanings. In November, Trump similarly told the media that he and Mamdani were motivated to help New York City.

“We have one thing in common,” Trump said. “We want this city that we love to do very well. And I wanted to congratulate the mayor. He really ran an incredible race against, you know, a lot of smart people, starting with the early primaries against very strong people, very smart people. And he beat them, and he beat them easily. And I congratulated him, and we talked about some things about getting very strong housing and normal food, like affordable housing and food.”
