Six months later, LSU AD Verge Ausberry agrees that Ole Miss got the Lane Kiffin situation right.

Wait, common sense would have prevailed if the LSU administration had been put in the same position by Lane Kiffin, or any other coach for that matter?

Five months ago, the story about Kiffin leaving Ole Miss two weeks before the Rebels began their quest for a College Football Playoff title centered, in Kiffin’s mind, the idea that he wanted to coach the Rebels while he was the head coach at LSU.

Honestly, none of this made sense, no matter how you cut the cake. Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter would not allow Kiffin to be a walking board for a rival team, while at the same time keeping the door open to taking players with him to Baton Rouge.

You can agree or disagree with Rebels’ AD Keith Carter’s opinion, but when Kiffin told him the Saturday after the Egg Bowl that he was not signing a new contract with Ole Miss and was taking the LSU job, the discussion surrounding him staying in Oxford for CFP was over.

Ole Miss’ decision about Kiffin and CFP had already been made

In fact, it was more than a month before. Carter had emphasized that if Kiffin left, he would not coach Ole Miss in the postseason.

So, any kind of revisionist history is just that: a screenwriter trying to rewrite the ending.

As we’ve reported numerous times throughout this controversy, the Ole Miss administration was oblivious to what was happening outside of their building. Whether that was Florida officials flying to Oxford for a visit during the bye week, or Kiffin interviewing LSU officials in different ways during the final few weeks of the Rebels’ regular season.

But, lost in the actual reality of the situation was this thought from some in college football that Kiffin should have been given the opportunity to coach Ole Miss in the college football championship. Whether it was Nick Saban, others within the ESPN organization, or LSU fans trying to continue to poke fun at the bear, the endless ideas were endless.

Mind you, this would have been a bad decision on Ole Miss’ part, given that the story would not have focused on the epic season that took place, but rather on Lane Kiffin entering each game as a head coach at two different SEC schools.

Honestly, the fact that we’re still having this conversation five months later is strange, but Lane has done himself a favor over the past few months in terms of public relations, most recently with his take on how difficult it was to hire at Oxford in the past when racial tension was still on the rise.

But, Lane being Lane, he does everything he can to keep the conversation to himself, which I can’t say is surprising at all.

The LSU athletic director finally says the silent part out loud

Thankfully, we finally have some common sense coming out of Baton Rouge, in the form of LSU Athletic Director Verge Ausberry.

Should Lane have been allowed to coach Ole Miss during the playoff run, despite taking the LSU job one week before the postseason began?

Let’s change it, shall we?

If LSU were to have Lane Kiffin as their head coach, and an opposing school hired him during the Tigers’ run, would the Tigers management allow their head coach to roam during the CFP while he was the opposing school’s head coach?

“I’ll probably be like, ‘Nah, we’re not doing that. No,'” Verge Ausberry told USA TODAY Sports. “But, that hand was not handled.”

Wait, so after all the negative comments that came out about Kiffin accepting the LSU job, when he recruited the Ole Miss coach to CFP, did the LSU athletic director tell the head coach to get out of town?

NCAA SETTLEMENT CHAOS: NEW LEGAL MOVE COULD SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE LEGAL USE

“If I was Ole Miss, I probably would have made the same decision,” Verge Ausberry said. “I know LSU would have made the same decision. I don’t blame anyone.”

Well, you can check that.

LSU’s athletic director is a wise man, understanding the situation Ole Miss was put in at the time, because it’s likely that the time may come when he has to face the same situation, heaven forbid his sanity.

But, now we can move on to more important issues, such as what will happen to the salary cap that came out of the House resolution. Or, the ongoing battle between conferences not named the SEC and the fight to expand the CFP.

It’s shaping up to be a hostile few months for all of college athletics, and it has nothing to do with what happened in Baton Rouge last December.
