Alabama is one step closer to nominating a Republican successor to Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.

But deciding who will come out on top is still weeks away, given that Tuberville’s decision to enter the gubernatorial race and vacate his Senate seat has sparked a frenzied race to replace him. And in Alabama, if a candidate doesn’t get the most votes, a runoff begins.

Outside the field of Republican hopefuls, Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., and former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson are out of the seven conflicts. They will meet again on June 16.

It will also be another test of the strength of President Donald Trump’s support in Alabama, where his track record has not been 100%.

Moore, who announced his candidacy on Fox News Digital last year, has Trump’s support. It’s an endorsement that he reiterated during a recent conference call calling for the three-term House member’s support.

“He is a true America First Patriot who has been with me from the beginning,” Trump said during the meeting.

Moore, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and self-proclaimed hawk, has a long history of supporting Trump. Indeed, he was the first elected official in the country to support Trump during his first run for office in 2015.

“I think my first job is to protect people’s liberties and to support the president in that process,” Moore told Fox News Digital last year. “So, for us, it’s an opportunity to continue to fight for the America First agenda, and also make sure that we have members of the Senate from Alabama who are truly the voice of the people.”

Hudson narrowly edged into second place against Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall in a race that wasn’t closed until hours after polls closed.

Marshall has had a strong name ID entering the race, and has served as the Yellowhammer State’s top law enforcement officer since 2017.

And more recently, he made waves after asking a federal court in Alabama to follow the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana and allow state maps drawn during the 2020 cycle to be used on the first day.

But it wasn’t enough to best Moore or Hudson. And the winner of that competition next month will face Everett Wess and Dakarai Lariett, who are facing the same race.
