The Department of Education (ED) on Thursday responded to the Associated Press’ (AP) story accusing administrators of neglecting black students, saying its article was “inaccurate and dangerous.”
“It’s common practice for @AP to conduct critical civil rights investigations of ED as black and white issues when we see students of ALL races struggling academically,” ED wrote on X.
The AP wrote that the federal government has historically tried to address “systematic discrimination against blacks and other people of color.” The report took issue with the current ED’s stripping of “funding from other districts that it has used to create magnet schools aimed at greater diversity.”

The reporter noted that the Department of Justice “pressured schools to desegregate” and that “the Department of Education has worked to promote equal opportunity and hold schools accountable for racism.”
However, according to the AP, the administration is reversing that work on education as “civil rights advocates describe the Republican administration’s actions as a complete distortion of legislative history.”
“But under the Trump administration, efforts to address the deep inequality of students of color are seen as discriminatory against white students. Programs that have long resisted legal scrutiny are now quickly considered ‘illegitimate DEI’ – diversity, equity and inclusion – by the White House. Schools that do not comply with them have faced threats in some of their situations, AP wrote funding, lost AP, and AP.

The AP report goes on to cite investigations opened by the Trump administration into the curriculum of Chicago Public Schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District targeting black students.
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) was investigated by administrators over the Black Student Success Program, which resulted in the withholding of $20 million in federal funds over the program. ED Secretary Linda McMahon X sent in September of last year that the department’s Office of Human Rights (OCR) issued a letter to CPS saying the district violated anti-discrimination laws with its “Black Student Success Program,” which they noted only served black students.
Los Angeles was investigated for creating a similar program called the Black Student Success Program.
“In 2023, Defending Education, a conservative group based in Virginia, filed a complaint with the Department of Education, alleging discrimination against non-black students. The district said it would no longer consider Black enrollment but instead would focus only on metrics like high absenteeism and low test scores, insisting that all students can participate,” wrote the AP.

The ED responded with X that the article’s title was “unfair and dangerous,” arguing that such programs are a violation of the basic justice that all students deserve.
“Distributing resources unequally to students of one race at the expense of others is not only a violation of human rights, but it is a violation of the basic law that all students should receive,” added the department.
The AP did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
