The former NYC governor outran Trump appointee Dan Goldman in the primary

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is supporting Democratic candidates in the upcoming New York City elections. One person, Daria Lizar Avila Chevalier, is responsible for the scrutiny of left-wing policies, including ending prisons and ICE. These candidates have focused on being anti-Israel, accusing Israel of genocide and vowing to block military aid to the Jewish state. This push reflects the growing influence of socialist ideas within the Democratic Alliance party.

Former New York City manager Brad Lander, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vt., and New York City’s Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, beat Trump’s top impeachment count in one of the greenest House seats in the country.
Lander, who describes himself as a “liberal Zionist,” defeated Rep. Dan Goldman, DN.Y., was the only other Democrat in the House primary race. The blue district includes Lower Manhattan and the western parts of Brooklyn, taking in the liberal suburbs from Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side to Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Sunset Park.
Lander’s primary victory was also a victory for the city’s progressive wing, with Sanders and Mamdani helping Lander face off against Goldman, a wealthy former prosecutor and prominent Trump adversary who served as lead counsel during the first impeachment inquiry.
Goldman was first elected to Congress in 2022 after coming out of a crowded primary in a newly redrawn district. Before entering Congress, he gained national attention as a House Democratic adviser during Trump’s first impeachment and later became a frequent critic of the president on Capitol Hill.

The race was one of the most watched primaries in New York City, with Goldman and Lander squaring off over Israel, Gaza, immigration law, housing affordability and how Democrats should deal with President Donald Trump.
During their campaign, Lander attacked Goldman for voting for US military aid to Israel and criticized him for refusing to call the war in Gaza a genocide. Meanwhile, Goldman defended his support for Israel’s existence as a Jewish state and said voters in the region were more focused on domestic issues.

The two have also tackled immigration enforcement, with Lander saying he has supported ending ICE since 2018. But Goldman accused Lander of using his arrest of an anti-immigration protest at 26 Federal Plaza, where he and other elected officials wanted access to inspect ICE detention facilities, to raise political money.
Goldman’s campaign platform also called for “ending ICE as we know it,” though the incumbent framed his approach as more institutional than Lander’s, pointing to congressional oversight, litigation and legislation aimed at curbing ICE’s tactics.

While Tuesday’s Democratic Party Primary in New York’s 10th Congressional District was a test of the city’s far-left surge, it also drew attention to the rift between New York’s main Democrats, and Gov. Kathy Hochul supported Goldman while Mamdani and Sanders lined up behind Lander.
Lander entered the final round with public polls showing him in the lead, though Goldman argued that he is in a better position to take on Trump in Congress.
