‘The View’ hosts clash over support for scandal-plagued Maine Democrat

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

The co-hosts of “The View” are arguing on air about whether Democrats should hold their noses and support Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner as he remains mired in controversy.

“Yesterday, I was already on the phone,” recalled host Sunny Hostin. “I’m like, ‘Personality issues, morals are important. I can’t believe this is a person in Maine who’s going to face Susan Collins.’ Now I am convinced that we are in a really bad place in this country. Democrats should take the Senate. They have to take over the House. They should restore normality to this government. “

“If I lived in Maine, I would hold my nose and pull that bell and vote for him,” he concluded. “That’s all.”

“I strongly disagree with this,” managing partner Sara Haines responded. “I knew you would come back,” Hostin replied.

While Haines acknowledged that it is up to the people of Maine to decide who should represent them, he said that Americans need to do some soul-searching about political partisanship and basic moral values.

“We have a lot of crazy people with no morals, no integrity in DC. And if we’re going to say ‘Donald Trump is a problem. Look at this person, look at this person, look at who he’s surrounded by’ – we can’t shut our noses and send someone in there who is antisemitic, racist, bigoted, sexist, you name it,” he said.

“His marriage is the least of my problems,” Haines added. “Actually, that reminds me of someone who just goes to church. It’s everything else that confuses me that I can’t approve of. That’s when he starts to discriminate because it’s being talked about which jersey he’s wearing?”

He went on to say that he prefers to vote for Platner’s opponent, Susan Collins, citing her bipartisan record.

Host Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that there is plenty of time for the Democratic Party to field a better candidate.

“I’m very uncomfortable with the fact that it feels like we have Nazis on my right and Nazis on my left,” Griffin said of modern politics in general. “I feel like we can’t get that out of our eyes.

“Because we do,” Haines agreed. “That’s where the extracts come in.”

Platner, the Democratic nominee in the Maine Senate race, has been dogged by scandals ranging from allegations that he sent sexist messages while married to his wife Amy Gertner, to having a decades-long tattoo of a Nazi SS Totenkopf skull and the insignia of a concentration camp guard.

“I mean, there’s a lot of baggage out there that both sides have to deal with,” said co-producer Whoopi Goldberg as she lamented the general political climate. He then addresses many political scandals when he says, “There must be people who have never been accused of getting bad tattoos or feeling good.”

“Yes, we all have our faults,” he added, “But, come on.”

“All I’m saying is, I think at some point we have to think about doing better on both sides,” Goldberg said.

When he noted Platner’s claim that he didn’t know about tattoo associations, Haines pushed back, confused as to how someone could not know for 20 years that their tattoo was connected to the Nazis.

“I’m going to vote for the guy who says ‘I didn’t know,'” Goldberg said.

“He criticized other people for doing this,” Griffin replied.

“My point doesn’t change,” Goldberg said, adding, “We need a better standard, and it’s up to us!”
