Trump 25th Amendment push called ‘false’ by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, DR.I.

Dozens of Democrats in Congress want Republicans to impeach President Donald Trump over his threats against Iran, but one lawmaker says the idea is “absurd.”

Several Democrats in Congress want to invoke the 25th Amendment, a decades-old amendment to the Constitution that gives the president’s cabinet the power to remove him from office if he can’t do the job.

Some Democrats argue that Trump’s latest threat against Iran at the Truth Social – where he declared that “the whole civilization will die tonight” unless his demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz are met – is evidence that he has lost the ability to fulfill his role as commander-in-chief.

But Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, DR.I., does not believe now is the time to repeal the 25th Amendment.

“I’m getting a lot of traffic about the 25th Amendment after Trump’s bad rhetoric,” Whitehouse told X. “The president is going through a serious mental decline; I’m with you on that.”

“But unfortunately, calling for the 25th is unrealistic at this point, given his extraordinary Cabinet of sycophants and eccentrics, and Republican ‘foam backs,'” he continued. “We’re going to have to buckle down and win this old fashioned way.”

Doing so would require Vice President JD Vance and the majority of Trump’s Cabinet to agree to remove him. They will then send a proclamation to Congress, which Trump is likely to oppose, requiring a two-thirds vote in both chambers to formally remove him from office.

It’s a much higher bar than impeachment and conviction — and a step never before used to remove a sitting president.

Although the measure has been used a few times since it was enacted in the 1960s — either to briefly delegate power during medical procedures requiring anesthesia or to fill presidential vacancies — it has never been used to voluntarily remove a president.

Congressional Republicans similarly called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked against then-President Joe Biden late in his presidency, especially after his debate against Trump in the summer of 2024.

Still, Democrats are looking for help regarding Trump’s Easter comments and his latest post on Tuesday.

“If I were in the Trump Cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment,” said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on X. “This is completely irreversible. He has killed thousands. He is about to kill thousands.”

Some accused Trump of making headlines for committing war crimes by targeting civilian infrastructure.

When asked if he believes that the administration will commit war crimes by targeting electricity and bridges, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said, “No.”

“It’s a work in progress, and when he needs energy, he uses that energy,” Ernst said.

Most Republicans have remained silent on Trump’s position.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comment and has not yet received a response.
