President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the world’s two largest powers prepare to discuss Taiwan, trade and the fragile US-China relationship that is increasingly shaped by military tensions and economic rivalry.
The meeting comes at a tense time for Washington, as the US-Iran standoff is under strain following recent military exchanges in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump is expected to press Xi about China’s economic and strategic support for both Iran and Russia, including oil revenues, dual-use materials and possible arms transfers, according to senior administration officials.
Top American business leaders also accompanied Trump to Beijing, including executives from Apple, Boeing, Tesla, BlackRock and Goldman Sachs, highlighting the administration’s focus on securing economic deals and strategic negotiations.

The White House also previewed talks on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and China’s rapidly expanding nuclear program — areas where officials acknowledged deep mistrust and limited progress despite ongoing channels of communication.
On the economic side, the administration is focusing on more targeted trade initiatives, including a proposed US–China “Trade Board” that would help manage trade in sensitive goods. Officials said the framework could initially cover trade in the “double-digit billions,” with an emphasis on sectors such as agriculture and aerospace.

The summit comes after more than a year of tariff hikes and awkward deals between Washington and Beijing, with both sides still trying to stabilize trade relations marred by export controls, rare international disputes and retaliatory measures.
Trump came into office promising a more aggressive trade policy toward China, imposing sweeping tariffs and export restrictions that have prompted retaliatory measures from Beijing and global markets. While both governments later agreed to an interim trade deal reached during talks in Busan, South Korea, by 2025, many of the underlying disputes remain unresolved.

Administration officials said the talks in Beijing are expected to include the possible addition of programs linked to unconventional land sales, as well as more Chinese purchases of US agricultural products and aircraft.
The administration has also maintained a strong stance on Taiwan ahead of the summit.
Authorities have noted that the US has approved more arms sales to the island in Trump’s first year than during the previous administration, stressing that Washington is not compromising its defense commitments despite ongoing negotiations with Beijing.
