Social media erupted on Tuesday morning when President Donald Trump warned in a Truth Social letter that all “civilization is going to die tonight,” while threatening a deadly US attack against Iran that sparked outrage from critics.
“All civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” Trump said in the post.
“However, now that we have a Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, intelligent, and irrational minds win, maybe something amazing and revolutionary will happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complicated history of the Country,” said Trump. “47 years of looting, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

In an earlier tweet by Truth Social released on Easter Sunday, the president threatened Tuesday’s attacks on power plants and bridges in the Middle Eastern country. During his remarks on Monday, Trump revealed that the US “has a plan … where all the bridges in Iran will be destroyed by 12 o’clock tomorrow night, where every power plant in Iran will be disabled, on fire, exploded, and will not be used again. I mean complete demolition at 12 o’clock.”
Trump gave the Iranian regime until 8 pm ET on Tuesday to agree to a ceasefire that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said he does not want this attack to happen, but the threat against the entire civilization makes social media different.
Some accused the president of threatening genocide, while others suggested that tough talk is a way to negotiate.
Newsweek’s Josh Hammer recalled Salena Zito’s 2016 quote to “take Trump seriously but not literally,” and said ten years later that message still rings true.
“And it’s really amazing that it still needs to be said,” Hammer wrote.

New York Times columnist David French was quick to criticize the message.
“This is a completely strange statement. If you hear this kind of screaming from a family member who has no power at all, you would worry about it. For the president, it’s scary. This is an obvious place of the 25th Amendment, but people are so powerless that they can’t see it,” answered French.
Anti-Trump pundit Charlie Sykes announced that he had “three quick thoughts” that weren’t too humbling, asking, “(1) Has any president of this country — or for that matter, any leader of a liberal democracy — ever threatened the destruction of ‘an entire civilization’ before?”
“(2) The line between a so-called ‘crazy theory’ and a real madman is very thin, isn’t it? (3) It was a really bad idea to entrust this man with the nuclear button, wasn’t it?” Sykes continued.
Billionaire Tom Steyer, a liberal megadonor and California gubertorial candidate, declared that Trump should “get out” of office.
“If this isn’t a reason to invoke the 25th Amendment, nothing is,” Steyer wrote. “You’re crazy.”
While many have criticized Trump’s threats, others have shown support or downplayed these comments.
“The truth is, no pundit, influencer, or anonymous fur has a clue what Trump is going to do tonight. That is perhaps Trump’s ultimate strength, keeping everyone on their toes after all these years. I, for one, have faith in him and the people around him,” wrote libertarian podcaster Dave Rubin.
“Donald Trump has been a national politician for ten years. Anyone who still responds to the boy’s negotiating tactics and hyperbole with this kind of hysteria ten years on should be kicked out of political analysis. If he removes Tehran at 8pm, I’ll admit I’m crazy,” wrote Daily Wire founder Jeremy Boreing.
Outkick’s Clay Travis wrote, “Donald Trump has made hyperbolic comments as part of his negotiating tactics for a full decade, mostly on social media, and yet people are still running like crazy in response to what he wrote here. I really don’t get it.”
IRAN WAR NEAR ‘END’ AS TRUMP’S EYES FINAL FRONTIER — WHAT THE END MIGHT LOOK LIKE
Conservative Radio host Erick Erickson said, “The Left defines a rational objective for everyone except Trump. It’s probably no coincidence that he’s beaten them twice.”
Meanwhile, Bill Kristol declared, “To the conservatives who object when some of us suggest that Trump is a fascist, and who complain when we point out that most of the existing conservatism in America has become fascism, if you say nothing about Trump’s threat of genocide you are proving a point.”
MS NOW political analyst Richard Stengel wrote, “An American president who threatens the death of an ancient civilization is somehow the only study of 250 years of the constitutional republic that the framers saw as a model for all mankind.”
The former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, who resigned last month because of his opposition to the Iran war, also warned on Tuesday that what the president is proposing will jeopardize America’s status as a world superpower.
“Trump believes that he is threatening Iran with destruction, but it is America that is now in danger. If he tries to destroy the Iranian civilization, the United States will no longer be considered a stable power in the world, but as an agent of chaos – effectively ending our status as the greatest power in the world,” Kent wrote in the post X. to avoid a disaster if Trump finds the courage to pursue serious negotiations rather than reckless aggression and destruction. “
Many others took to social media with thoughts about Trump’s threat:
The White House said Iran still has time to strike a deal.
“The Iranian regime has until 8PM Eastern Time to meet a minute and make a deal with the United States. Only the President knows where things stand and what he’s going to do,” press secretary Caroline Leavitt told Fox News Digital when asked about the threat.
