With the midterm elections six months away, President Donald Trump’s poll numbers remain underwater.
A two-month war with Iran, public opinion polls showing he is unpopular with most Americans, and rising gas prices as a direct result of the conflict caused a further slide in Trump’s approval ratings this spring.
The president’s election woes are a political drag on his party, as Republicans scramble to protect their Senate and House leadership in this year’s elections. This is because the president’s approval rating has long been the most watched measure of a president’s strength and how well his party can do over the next few terms.
But disappointing numbers aren’t a problem unique to Trump — his recent predecessors in the White House have also seen their poor numbers reduce their teams in mid-term contests.

Trump stands at 42% approval and 51% disapproval in the latest Fox News national poll, conducted April 17-20. Some recent polls put the president’s approval rating in the 30s and higher, with his disapproval reaching or exceeding 60%.
The president’s approval rating is just above 40%, and his disapproval is above 56%, in an average of all recent national polls, according to a composite from RealClearPolitics.

“It may come as cold comfort to the White House, but there is a tendency for voters to be harsh on all presidents,” noted Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who helps run the Fox News poll with Democrat Chris Anderson.
He’s not kidding.
Then-President Joe Biden’s approval ratings were underwater for most of his presidency.
Four years ago, as he headed into the 2022 midterm elections, then-President Joe Biden was also dealing with sky-high gas prices. His approval rating stands at 45%, and disapproval at 53%, in a Fox News poll conducted in late April and early May 2022. And RealClearPolitics’ average of all national polls during that time put Biden’s numbers at 42%-53%.

Trump’s two most recent two-term predecessors were also underwater within six months of their second midterm elections.

Then-President Barack Obama stood at 43%-52% in early May 2014, and former President George W. Bush was in the dark at 35%-59% during the same period in 2006.

Republicans were defeated in the 2006 midterms and Democrats were defeated in 2014.
Although Biden’s bleeding numbers did nothing for the Democrats in 2022, the party managed to exceed expectations and their majority in the House thanks in part to the extreme emphasis on the issue of abortion, following the intense opinion that the summer of the Supreme Court majority overturned the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade, which we had officially approved for half a century.
