NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

For more than 120 years, the New York Yankees have been a fan tradition, as they remain the only team in Major League Baseball without an official alternate jersey. However, all that could change.

According to The Athletic, Yankees players have met with top teams about the idea of wearing a new jersey.

The players, the outlet noted, want the jersey on the road, leaving the home lines unchanged.

The Bronx Bombers wear blue tops during spring training that read “New York” during spring road games, which they would likely wear on the road if the change was made. Home pinstripes have become more common in home spring training games in recent years, compared to the same blue top as the NY combine.

That look is often used on player “shirseys”, and is also a replica sold online.

The Yankees have participated in different jerseys in the past, including Players’ Weekend from 2017 to 2019, a nod to the 1912 team when it played in Boston for the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park, and jerseys commemorating the Black Yankees’ 1996 Yankees uniform 996. Field of Dreams debuts in 2021. However, none of those jerseys were ever officially included in the rotation.

The Yankees are also the only team without a last name on the back of their jersey, home or away. They are also up against two teams including Athletics, who do not have a City Connect jersey. The Athletics, currently in Sacramento after their lease in Oakland expires following the 2024 season, will begin play in Las Vegas in 2028.

Owner Hal Steinbrenner, The Athletic noted that he may have the last call, has been ready to change in recent years. The Yankees added an advertising patch to their jerseys in 2023, and as of last year, the “well-groomed” facial hair under the lip was reinstated after a 50-year ban by Steinbrenner’s father, George.
