Former CNN correspondent Jim Acosta compares the removal of the Kennedy Center to the Berlin Wall

The former CNN anchor turned YouTube content creator went live for nearly 11 hours from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning awaiting the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, but made a ridiculous comparison that ended in mockery.

Jim Acosta, a well-known journalist who opposes Trump, was the main correspondent of CNN and established “CNN Newsroom” from 2021 until the beginning of 2025. He worked for the network for a total of 18 years, but left unceremoniously when executives proposed moving his morning show from midnight to the 2 am slot.

Acosta hosted the marathon, which he called a live viewing party, on “The Jim Acosta Show” on YouTube. Most covered was a live image of the scaffolding, covered by a tarp, behind which workers were hard at work removing Trump’s name from the building.

“This is a lot like watching the Berlin Wall come down,” Acosta said in an odd comparison made around 3:30 a.m.

“It is a sign that humanity, that kind of people can resist violence,” he continued. “As long as it takes, we promised that we would continue to put this program on, and by golly, we did, because we knew what this meant to so many people out there, and we know how important this is.”

In December 2025, the Kennedy Center’s board voted to rename the performing arts center the “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” causing a backlash from the political left.

A Democratic congresswoman sued to have the change overturned, and a federal judge ruled last week that the center’s original name, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, should be restored.

Before the climax of Acosta’s night, he had stopped broadcasting and lay down, leaving his producer waiting. He missed the book release, but was informed further by his producer.

“It looks like they may have touched the bullets,” the producer said 10 hours and 18 minutes into the broadcast. “I can’t say whether they are removing them or not. But it looks like there may be some progress.”

“So, it looks like they’re handing out these books,” he said. “I don’t know if you can see it but they’re loosening the bullets. The bullets are officially going down. So this means I’m probably going to have to call Jim Acosta and he’s not going to be too happy because he’s going to be woken up.”

Acosta rushed to the scene to deliver his report.

“I just got home, and we thought this might have happened later in the morning, and they did this at night,” Acosta said as he returned to the scene. “They did this at three o’clock in the morning, and to do it – the icing on the cake, the chef’s kiss on all this for Donald Trump – is that they had to put up a big white canvas to protect Trump and his feelings from the shame of seeing all this go down in front of the cameras.”

He lashed out at the president for several minutes when he returned to the scene in Northwest Washington, DC, and continued to lament the injustice of the tarmac that blocked the project from the public.

Acosta said Trump “slammed his name illegally and brutally outside the Kennedy Center,” later adding that the president “acts like a child. [who] he doesn’t want to give up his toy, he doesn’t want to give up his toy after mommy and daddy tell him it’s bedtime.”

A newly minted social media influencer was mocked for the project, which was posted on X and quickly went viral.

“Ah yes. The Berlin Wall famously came down to a crowd of one guy talking to himself not a bunch of happy prisoners. Jim Acosta is crazy,” said another popular X user.

“This is sad. I don’t think there’s been so little going on in my life that I’ve been sitting outside a building all day waiting for a name to be removed from it,” said Matt Whitlock, a conservative commentator. “Jim Acosta makes a strong play to take over as the angry blueanon wine finalist. Watch out for Jennifer Welch.”

“Decades of Communist oppression V. sign on the building,” said one user after watching the clip. “The similarities are amazing.”

“Give that man a Pulitzer. What a dipsht [sic],” said another sarcastically.
