Vice President JD Vance’s wife Usha revealed that the killing of activist Charlie Kirk last year influenced their family’s decision to have a fourth child.
Vance and his wife appeared on “CBS News Sunday Morning” to discuss Vance’s upcoming book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith.” In Vance’s letter, he described sitting with Kirk’s wife Erika on the day of Kirk’s murder in September, where he told Usha “through tears” that he “regrets only having two children with Charlie.”
Vance wrote that, although they had discussed having another child before, “something changed” for him and Usha after Kirk’s death.

“I think that JD has been thinking about this for a while, this idea that there might be another child that he can love like the three we had,” said Usha.
He continued, “It really stood out [him]that idea that if you can have another child, you will have no regrets. And if we couldn’t have another child, then we were very happy with the children we had. So it was very powerful what he said about his family and it was very touching for both of us.”
The Vances announced Usha’s pregnancy in a statement posted on social media in January. The couple said the baby is a boy and will be born in July.

In the interview, Usha emphasized that although Kirk’s death was not the main reason for having a fourth child, his killing happened as she thought it would.

“I think I had just started to open my mind to the possibility. I won’t say this to myself in any way, but it came up during the conversation we were having,” said Usha.
Vance’s book is expected to be released on June 16. In an interview with “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Vance described the book as describing his “long and winding road” to finding faith in God after feeling “lost” as a young man.
