President Donald Trump on Friday announced a major expansion of his administration’s program aimed at helping Americans get cheaper prescription drugs.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the government-backed website TrumpRx.gov has added 160 prescription drugs, bringing the number of discounted drugs available through the program to more than 800.

“I am pleased to announce that TrumpRx.gov is adding 160 more Prescription Drugs, at greatly reduced prices, for a new total of over 800 commonly used Prescription Drugs,” Trump wrote.

Trump introduced the program in February, saying Americans have long paid more for prescription drugs than consumers in many other countries.

The website was launched after the administration finalized agreements with 16 major pharmaceutical companies under pricing arrangements called “nations of preference”.

Under the agreements, participating drugmakers received tax-related exemptions while agreeing to lower the prices of certain drugs and extend discounted pricing to consumers who pay a premium through TrumpRx, according to the administration.

Companies including Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have participated in the initiative and have agreed to lower the prices of the popular weight loss drug GLP-1.

Administration officials also highlighted discounts on a variety of other products, including inhalers, HIV treatment, diabetes medications and fertility drugs.

TrumpRx.gov allows users to search for discounted drugs, view estimated savings and generate coupons for participating prescriptions.

Trump said the measure builds on his first term’s efforts to lower prescription drug costs.

“I was proud to make history in my first term when we lowered drug prices, even if by small percentages, because this was a HUGE change compared to other presidents who raised drug prices, relentlessly and dramatically, every year,” Trump wrote.

“Then, during my Second Term, I decided to go BIG with the Most Popular Nation Pricing – Meaning, we don’t pay more or, ideally, less than any other Country for the exact same Medicine,” he continued. “Now we’re cutting Prices, and we’re cutting them a LOT, sometimes 400 or 500 or 600 percent!”

Trump also said that this plan has made a big saving for consumers.

“These Top Nation Specials have already saved American Patients over 400 Million Dollars since the launch of TrumpRx.gov,” he said.

The president also pointed out that prices play a big role in securing price agreements.

“Yes, Many Popular Nations would not have happened without the use of TARIFFS, which made other countries ‘pay’ instead of relying on American patients to be discharged, as has been the case for decades until I ordered an immediate ‘stop’ to this unjust and, frankly, stupid situation.
